Upper Mustang Trekking

Upper Mustang Trek located north of Annapurna region at an elevation of 4000m is physically and culturally division of the Tibetan highland. The valleys are barren and dry with vivid rock formations holding many caves high up in the rock face. Upper Mustang is a restricted spot until 1992, at present visitors are allowed with entry permit. Upper Mustang is one of the regions left where one can perceive untouched Tibetan way of life.

Upper Mustang Trekking begins from Jomsom after taking flight for 25 minutes from Pokhara. After arriving Jomsom, you will follow the Kali Gandaki River to reach Kagbeni. From Kagbeni the restricted region of Upper Mustang commences. We will visit the famous pilgrim visit of Muktinath before moving North to Upper Mustang. From Kagbeni moving further to the North direction, we will reach Lo Mangthang, Tibetan kingdom with walled capital. Also, we will partly unusual way via Dhakmar, going across 2 passes at an elevation of approximately 4,200 m. Near to Dhakmar, you will find the ancient Tibetan monastery, the Lo Gekar Monastery constructed in the 8th century.

The best season to go for Upper Mustang trek is March to November.

 

The Upper Mustang region is classified as a restricted area, and much of the region, including its trekking trails, also lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area. Foreigners are required to obtain a Restricted Area Permit in addition to an Annapurna Conservation  entry permit to trek in Upper Mustang.

Where to get the permit:

Kathmandu: Permits can be purchased in the Nepal Tourism Board Office on Pradarshani Marg, Kathmandu, Tel: +977 1 4256909.
*If you book with a trekking agency they will arrange these for you.
 
Annapurna Conseervaitonn Area Permit Fee: 

For Nepali Nationals: Nepali Rupees 100 

For SAARC Nationals: Nepali Rupees 1,000.

For other Nationals (other than SAARC countries): Nepali Rupees 3,000.

Note:

  • Entrance fee not required for children under 10 years of age.
  • Trekkers are required to obtain individual Entry Permits for visiting Annapuran Conservation Area.
  • Two passport size photographs are required while applying for each Entry Permit.

Day 01 :Arrival in Katmandu.
After you arrive at Kathmandu, our representative will greet you at the airport and transfer you to a hotel. Later afternoon will include short briefing of the voyage which is followed by a welcome dinner in a typical Nepalese kitchen.

Day 02 : Free Day, Prepare Mustang Trek Permit.
Today you have a free day in Kathmandu. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 03 :Kathmandu to Pokhara by Bus/Car or plane. Bus Take 7 hour and Plane take only 35 minute.
After our breakfast, we take a drive for 6 hours or take 35 minutes flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara s where we can view some wonderful scene of river and countryside throughout our drive. After we arrive at Pokhara, with some refreshment, sightseeing tour to palces like Davi's fall, Gupteshore cave, famous Fewa Lake boating and others will be done. We shall be staying overnight in a hotel.

Day 04 :Fly to Jomsom from Pokhara and trek to Kagbeni
Early in the morning, you will take a 3 hours flight from Pokhara to reach Jomsom and start trekking to Kagbeni. Today we will walk to Kagbeni (280m), our checkpoint for the entry to Upper Mustang. The altitude diverges from about 915m at Pokhara to approximately 3880m at Muktinath walking uphill and downhill.

Day 05 :Kagbeni to Chele
Today, while leaving Kagbeni, we will trek through the sandy and breezy paths and stop on a beautiful spot. This track ascends and we will walk downhill. We will arrive at Tangbe settlement with crops pasture. From here we will trek further on to Chhusang and go across the river to the gigantic red chunk of conglomerate dropping down from the cliff through which the Kaligandaki pours out. We will move to small ridge to reach Chele village. Overnight at Chele.

Day 06 :Chele to Sangboche or Gilling
Starting to trek from Eklo Bhatti we will ascend to Taklam La Pass via plain lands and narrow broaden with vistas of Tilicho Peak, Nilgiri, Yakawa Kang and Damodar Danda. The trail now additionally descends a small to the community of Samar. Walking further for about 3 hours will arrive at Syanbochen or Gilling(3475m). Overnight in Syanbochen.

Day 07 :Sangboche or Gilling to Ghami
We will trek ascending to the Yamda La pass, chortans and tiny local settlements. You will view the typical local architecture adorned bright red and white. We ascend up to the Nyi Pass (4010m) and go down to Ghami one of the in the Upper Mustang area (3520m). Overnight in Ghami.

Day 08 :Ghami to Tsarang
We will go across the Ghami River and then from here the trail ascends to a raised ground and passes next to the longest Mani wall. From the ending point of the wall the path moves east to Tsarang and after moving up for 11km and then walking down we will reach Tsarang. Overnight in Tsarang.

Day 09 :Tsarang to Lo-Manthang
On this day, we will walk to Lo-Mangthang, the capital region of Mustang. A 300 m long and 150 m wide wall has secluded against warriors, thief and the fierce winds. The small settlement of Lo-Mangthang is made up of over a thousand of people whose homes are linked by fine cable stony alleys. Overnight in Lo-Mangthang.

Day 10 :Lo-Mangthang - visiting surrounding areas.
We have a day rest at Lo-Mangthang and you will visit around there today. Lo-Manthang was established in about 1450 by the son of the renowned Ame Pal, who subjugated and unified the small kingdoms in Upper Mustang. Also, we can observe the Mustang Palace soaring over the settlement. Overnight in Lo-Mangthang.

Day 11 :Lo-Manthang to Tsarang

Day 12 :Tsarang to Ghami

Day 13 :Ghami to Samar via. Nya-La pass
Leaving Ghami today we will walk on passing through unforgettable and striking sights. Then, we enter Samar (3660m) and spend the night. Overnight in Teahouse.

Day 14 :Samar to Kagbeni
We will head off from Samar and trek to Kagbeni (2858m). We will get to Kagbeni and relax today with the local people. Overnight in Teahouse.

Day 15 :Kagbeni to Jomsom
After having our breakfast, we have a moderately short walk today that will take us back to Jomsom (2700m). Here we can enjoy Apple brandy, Apple wine, dried apple sweets etc. Overnight in Jomsom.

Day 16 :Fly back to Pokhara – Rest
Taking a scenic flight from Jomsom, you will fly from the stunning mountain range amid the gorge of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri peaks. Our representative will wait for you at the Pokhara airport and then transfers you to the hotel. Overnight in Lakeside Hotel.

Day 17 :Drive back to Kathmandu (Rest day shopping)
After a tiring trip, we will drive back to Kathmandu which will take about 6 hours by a tourist bus. Today you can either relax in your hotel or go for some shopping. Later you can even explore around the city and overnight at hotel.

Day 18 :Departure from Nepal.
