Everest Base Camp Trek Difficulty

  • E. B. C. trek is a high altitude trek. The trekking trails aren’t even. There can be some difficult sharp ascends. Lots of EBC trekkers suffer from altitude sickness while trying to gain more altitude in a day. You should walk slowly. Maintain your own pace of the walk. Most important, get proper acclimatization.
  • If you are a beginner, choosing the EBC trek to begin is not a good idea. Everest region is tricky. The frequent weather changes are very common. The trek is difficult to even those who have several trekking experiences. Previous trekking experience is a boon.
  • EBC is a long trek, nearly 62 kilometers from Lukla. You will have to walk for 8 to 9 hours a day sometimes. The trek demands a good physique and a strong mentality. Get some physical fitness training before you go on the trek.
  • The EBC trail consists of rugged sections. Some trekkers get blisters on their feet because of uncomfortable hiking shoes. Make sure you wear a comfortable one. You are going on a long duration trek to a remote part of Nepal.

Our E.B.C. 14 Days starts at Lukla, 2800m. We lose some altitude when we trek to Phakding, 2652. From Phakding, the elevation keeps on ascending till we reach the largest elevation. Kala Patthar, 5554m is the highest elevation on the trek.

From Phakding, the trek follows Monjo (2840m) – Namche Bazaar (3440)- Kyangjuma (3570m) – Tengboche (3860m).

From Tengboche, we ascend to Pheriche (4280m) – village of Dingboche (4360m) – Dughla (4600m) – Lobuche (4940m) – Gorkhshep (5170m). Finally, we will reach the Everest Base Camp (5364m).

After the visit to Kalapathar, we descend down to Dingboche (4360m) – Namche Bazaar, and finally to Lukla.

 

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu. (1300m)

You will land at the Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu. Our Airport representative will be standing with a sign of our company. Our private tourist bus will be waiting for you too. We will receive you and will escort you to your hotel.

Take some rest. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 02: Free and Arrangement Day

Today is your second day here in Nepal. You will have a free day for shopping, sightseeing around Kathmandu (opt.), or planning your trip.

Get some trekking accessories and gears if you have to. You can buy or rent them at some shops in Thamel. If you need some snacks for the trek, buy them as well.

You can also go sightseeing around Kathmandu. Seven out of Ten World Heritage sites are here in Kathmandu. You can go on a day tour in Kathmandu.

Apart from shopping or touring, you will have a pre-trip meeting today at our office. You will meet with your trek guide and the fellow trekkers.

Please bring your passport, passport-size photos. Include a copy of your travel insurance policy. We may need them. Clear the due balance, if any.

Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla, 2860m then Trek to Phakding

Flight Duration: 40 to 45 minutes

Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hours

Trek Distance: 10 kilometers

Max Altitude: 2860 meters

Have an early morning breakfast in Kathmandu. Our staff will get you to the Tribhuvan International Airport.

Board on the domestic plane to Lukla airport. The flight is a short duration flight. You will see the aerial views of different cultural monuments in the Kathmandu valley. Also, you will see splendid views of the mountains.

The flight is adventurous. The moment when the flight lands over narrow airstrips in Lukla airport is thrilling. After arriving in Lukla, we will meet our porters and other staff.

Now, we will start to trek from Lukla to Monzo. We walk over the trail that start with a descent. After walking for a couple of hours from Lukla, we will reach the Dudh Kosi River. The river comes from the glaciers and the water has a chalky color.

We will walk on the trail following the river till we reach Phakding. The trek to Phakding is easier as the road is flat with little ups and downs. On the way, we will see more donkeys than yaks. They carry loads up for trekkers and climbers.

Day 04: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar, 3445m

Trek Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Trek Distance: 4 kilometers

Max Altitude: 3445 meters

From Phakding, we set off north to Monzo. We continue to trek uphill, passing through several villages. We will see small shops and tea houses along the way.

From Phakding, we walk through Zamphuti and Benkar to Monjo. We will walk on the suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi river twice. Finally, we will reach Monjo.

Monjo is a small village in the Everest region. It lies towards the north of Phakding. It sits in the Dudh Kosi river valley towards the south of Jorsale.

Now, we walk towards the south of the Monzo village. We will follow a trail to Jorasele.

Enjoying the sunrise view over the mountains, we start walking uphill. We will walk through the forest of Rhododendrons.

Before reaching Jorasele, we will enter Sagarmatha National Park. The national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will take a short break in the town of Jorasele.

From Jorasele, it’s a 600-meter climb to Namche. The trail is quite steep, rugged, and tough. We will reach the Khumbu river. The river is beautiful with clean blue water.

We will walk across the Khumbu river over a suspension bridge. We will see Tabuche, the first major snow-capped peak in the trek.

We start ascending uphill after crossing the bridge. This part of the walk is the hardest of today. It will take almost 2 hours to reach the first viewpoint of Everest.

On walking further, we will finally reach Namche. Namche is a great town in the Khumbu region. We will see lots of small stores in Namche. They sell a wide range of items. You can get anything, from souvenirs to trekking gear.

The place is also famous for its local Yak Cheese. We will also see people selling general groceries. There are many restaurants, coffee shops, and bars also.

Overnight in Namche.

Day 05: Rest Day in Namche Bazaar.

Trek Duration: 2 to 3 hours

Trek Distance: 800 meters

Max Altitude: 3440 meters

Today is an acclimatization and exploration day. Rest days aren’t for lying in and rest. During acclimatization days, we trek high during days and sleep low during the nights.

We will ascend above Namche towards the Everest View Hotel. The climb is steep at first but it becomes easier after a while.

We will reach Khunde, a large Sherpa village. We will then walk towards Khumjung. Khumjung is a wealthy area with good houses. From Khumjung, we will see beautiful views of Mt. Ama Dablam.

A little walk uphill from Khumjung will take us to the famous Everest View Hotel. The hotel exhibits splendid views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam.

We will spend some time at the hotel and will return back to Namche Bazaar for an overnight stay.

Day 06: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3850m)

Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hours

Trek Distance: 9.5 kilometers

Max Altitude: 3975 meters

We will depart early in the morning from Namche Bazaar towards Tengboche. Today, we will see lots of amazing sceneries. Today, we will meet an altitude of 3850m.

While trekking along the trail, we will see lots of Buddhist monuments. We will see small Gompas and Buddhist Stupas.

The trail follows contour from Namche. We will walk across the stone steps to reach the Mongla Pass, 3975 m. On the way, we will get the most real views of Mt. Ama Dablam. Rejoicing the vista, we will descend towards the Dudh Koshi River.

After arriving at the river, the trail again ascends uphill. After a few hours climb, we reach the Tengboche Village. The trail is beautiful. We will walk through the lustrous Rhododendron forests.

After we reach the Tengboche village, we will check into a tea house. Now, we again trek uphill towards the Tengboche monastery.

Tengboche monastery is the biggest monastery in the Khumbu region. The Monastery opens at 3:00 pm. The evening chants and prayers in the monastery are spiritual.

After observing the Buddhist ceremony and prayers, we watch out for the sunset views. The monastery site exhibits a fantastic panorama of the surrounding Himalayas. The sugar coated peaks like Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku looks enchanting during sunset.

After viewing the marvelous vistas, we will walk down to the Tengboche village. Overnight in Tengboche.

Day 07: Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche (4350m)

Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hours

Trek Distance: 11 kilometers

Max Altitude: 4350 meters

Today, we will continue trekking through the lush alpine forests. We will walk across several small villages en route. Walking across the villages, you can witness the lifestyle of the locals. The people are cheerful and ready to help.

Our trek begins with a descent through the rhododendron forests. Now, an uphill path follows the descent. We ascend through the lush forests of Birch, Conifer, and Rhododendron.

We will pass the Khumbila Khola valley and will ascend towards the ridge line. The surrounding landscapes are awe striking. We will also see Mt. Taboche, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Cholatse, and many others.

While trekking we can admire the good views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. Before arriving at Pangboche, we walk downhill to Debuche and cross the Imja Khola.

We will start walking over the Pangboche trail. The Himalayan vista is admirable. The Pangboche Monastery is an attraction of the entire trek today.

We will continue walking to the Imja Valley and Lobuche River. Now comes the final ascent to Dingboche village.

We will notice a varying landscape as we reach Dingboche. There are no trees, but low shrubs. Dingboche is a famous summer settlement. We will see lots of yaks grazing over the sloppy cliffs.

It is a picturesque village. We will see the fields of Barley, Potato, and Buckwheat. There are stone walls built around the fields in Dingboche. The walls protect the crops from icy winds and grazing animals.

Also, we will see some amazing views of Lhotse, Amadablam, and Taboche.

Overnight in Dingboche.

Day 08: Acclimatization in Dingboche

Congratulations! You’ve made it over 4000 meters. We will have our second acclimatization day in Dingboche. On this day, you can go hiking to the Chukung village. From the village, you will see incredible Himalayan Views. Or you can hike to the nearby Nagarjuna Hill. The hilltop is popular for sightseeing.

After the 3 to 4 hours acclimatization hike, we will trek back to Dingboche and will spend the rest of the day there. You can do your laundry on this day. Overnight in Dingboche.

Day 09: Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche (4950m)

Trek Duration: 5 hours

Trek Distance: 11 kilometers

Max Altitude: 4950 meters

We set off after a warm breakfast in Dingboche. The trek starts with astonishing views of the mighty Himalayas. As we begin to trek, the Himalayas surround us on all sides.

The trek route is wider in the beginning. But as we get close to Dusa, the valley begins to get narrower. We will then walk past the campsite of the first successful Everest Expedition. The majestic view of Mt. Pumori comes into the display as we trek further.

We will continue seeing Mt. Pumori till the trail descends and curves. In this part of the trail, there is a stream. We will cross the stream and ascend to Duglha.

Dughla is a small village with garlands of prayer flags hung across the valley. From Dughla, we will head towards Lobuche. On the way we will ascend over the steep terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. We will walk across the huge boulders displaced by the glacier.

Climbing over the moraine is hard. Be careful! After the ascent is place called Chupki Lhara. Chupki Lhara is a ridge from where we can see motivating views of spectacular mountains.

The top of the ridge has lots of colorful prayer flags and stones. This is the Memorial Shrine. There, we will see hundreds of cairn memorials. They are memories of those who died in the mountains. We will spend some time there.

Now, we will start to walk again. The trail drops to the Khumbu glacial moraine. From there, we will be facing towards splendid vistas of several snowy peaks. Some of them are Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori and Mahalangur Himal. We can also see a great view of Mt. Nuptse.

Finally, we will reach Lobuche. Lobuche a small Sherpa settlement at the foot of Lobuche peak. We will get breathtaking views of mountains, highlighting the Lobuche peak itself. There is a high altitude research center in Lobuche. You can communicate for the rescue operation from there.

Overnight in Lobuche.

Day 10: Trek from Lobuche to Gorakshep (5160m). Trek to Everest Base Camp 5,364 m and Down to Gorakshep.

Trek Duration: 7 to 8 hours

Trek Distance: 15 kilometers

Max Altitude: 5364 meters

Today is the most awaited day. Finally! We will trek to the Everest Base Camp. We will start early in the morning. We will move towards Gorak Shep. Gorak Shep used to be the original base camp during the 1953 expedition.

Continuing the trail towards Gorak Shep, we will get a sight of the Khumbu Glacier. Today, the trail is gradual ups and downs. The trail becomes rough as we get nearer to Gorak Shep. We will have to walk over a large rock, up and down.

On arriving at Gorak Shep, we will take some rest. We will check into a hotel for overnight stay. Dropping our backpack at the hotel, we will start trekking towards the Everest Base Camp.

The walk is a rough uphill walk. We must walk slowly to avoid altitude sickness problem. On ascending, we will reach the top of Khumbu Glacier. We will also get a mesmerizing view of the Khumbu Icefall on walking further.

After walking for a few hours, we will finally stand at the Everest Base Camp, 5364 m. Being at the base camp is a mixed feeling of fluctuating emotions. It’s real! we are finally at the foot of the world’s highest peak!

The Everest Base Camp is immensely beautiful. Rejoice the amazing views of Mt. Nuptse, Khumbuste and Pumori. Get some pictures of you and Mt. Everest on the background. This moment will definitely be a memorable one. After all, EBC trek is a memory for lifetime.

After spending some time at the base camp, we will trek down to Gorak Shep. Overnight in Gorak Shep.

Day 11: Trek from Gorak Shep to Kalapathar (5554m). Trek down to Pheriche (4371m)

Trek Duration: 7 to 8 hours

Trek distance: 13 kilometers

Max Altitude: 5554 meters

We will start very early in the morning. An early morning hike for 3 to 4 hours will take us to Kala Pathar. Kala Patthar is the best viewpoint of Mt. Everest, Khumbu Glacier, and Khumbu Icefall.

During clear weather, the sunrise view over the snowy peak is magical. The entire Himalayan ranges glow with the touch of infant sun rays. You will feel like heaven is nowhere, but here.

From Kala Patthar, you will see 360 degrees panorama of the enchanting peaks. You will feel the Himalayas so close, almost at the tip of your nose. Capture your moment in photographs.

Kala Patthar is at high altitude. Staying there for longer increases the risk of altitude sickness. So, we will take some time to enjoy and will return back to Gorakshep and down to Pheriche,

Day 12: Trek from Pheriche to Namche Bazaar

Today is one of the longest days of Everest Base Camp trek. The trail includes much steep downhill climbs followed by equally steep ascents. Throughout the day, we will be walking tiring ups and downs.

The trail from Pheriche to Namche is a busy trail. We will meet lots of trekkers, climbers, and porters. Mostly in trekking and seasons, the trail sees lots of traffics. There are many bridges along the path.

We will walk through dense forests, and varying landscapes. The several ups and downs are difficult. But the beautiful sceneries, diverse flora, and fauna will keep you motivated.

After the strenuous hike today, we will finally arrive at Namche. Namche is the busiest Sherpa hub in the Everest region.

Overnight in Namche.

Day 13: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla

After having a nice and warm breakfast in Namche, we start trekking through the beautiful trekking trails.  We will head down the steep climb. Be more careful! Walking down the steep trail is hard. Walk down slowly, take your time. Enjoy the inspiring views of some of the highest mountains in the world.

Today, we will walk back to Lukla, the gateway to Everest. Our EBC trek is now on its tail. We will walk all the way through Manjoo, Benkar, Phakding, and finally to Lukla.

We will cross several suspension bridges over the Dudh Kosi river. Walking across the bank of the river along the forests feels amazing. We will see some small Sherpa settlements on our way back.

The trek is rejoiceful. Finally, we will arrive at Lukla. Lukla is a quite busy place. There are various lodges, tea houses, and shops in Lukla.

Tomorrow, we will return to Kathmandu via an early morning flight from Lukla airport. It’s now time to wrap up the trek.

Day 14: Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu

Flight Duration: 40 to 45 minutes

Today is our last day in the Everest region. We will get into the early morning flight from Lukla airport to Kathmandu.

Get a window seat for an enchanting aerial view of the entire region. The Himalayas are promising. Bid them a farewell.

Finally, we will arrive at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. From there, we will transfer you to your hotel. Get some rest in your comfortable hotel room.
