Lukla Flights Diverted to Ramechhap Airport

Starting from October 1st, 2023 all flights will again be diverted from Kathmandu to Ramechhap. We expect diversions to continue until the end of November. Here is what it will mean for your trek if you need to fly to Lukla via Ramechhap.
Ramechhap is a small airstrip 140 km (85 miles) from Kathmandu with little or no existing tourist infrastructure. The drive to the airport takes around 5 hours and the return to Kathmandu between 5 and 8 hours depending on traffic. These diversion will impact all trekkers regardless of the tour company or the airline your Lukla flight was booked with to the Everest Region.
All Regular flight to Lukla Airport in Everest Himalayas Region will be rerouted From Kathmandu Airport to Manthali (Ramechhap) Airport effectively from October 1, 2023 until end of Novemebr, 2023.
Reason of Rerouted Airport: The flight change has been made due to an increase in international flights in and out of Kathmandu Airport and the deviation of the Lukla fixed wing flights to Manthali (Ramechhap) airport is an effort to ease heavy air traffic issues.

Ramechhap (Manthali) Airport
Ramechhap (Manthali) Airport is located in headquarter of Ramechhap district of Province No. 3 in Nepal. Ramechhap Airport is also known as Manthali Airport.
Manthali Airport, located 132 km northeast of Kathmandu, is about 5 hours Deluxe Jeep drive (For normal Regular Vehicle it takes about 6 Hours ) from Kathmandu City. The airport is situated at an elevation of 474 meters above sea level and has a 518-metre runway.

So you will catch your flight easily without having stay overnight at Ramechep. This is easy way to remove the hassle of finding accommodation in Ramechep.

Manthali airport is a domestic airport that lies towards 132 km east of Kathmandu at the capital of Ramechhap district. Reaching the airport from Kathmandu takes nearly 4 to 5 hours of road drive along the BP Highway. Manthali is a small town with a few visitors, which is certainly gonna change this Spring.
As we recommend, you should stay at Manthali if you have an early morning flight to Lukla. But the question is are there sufficient accommodations in Manthali?
Manthali isn’t a popular tourist destination. It is not a highly facilitated place too. The facilities of accommodation at Manthali are limited and the facilities are also basic. In this Spring, due to the diversion of Lukla flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, Manthali will receive a lot of travelers. Also, there will be flight crews and staffs who will be staying there. So, the limited accommodation facilities here may not be enough.
Instead of staying in Manthali itself, you can leave Kathamndu early morning like at 3 or 4 AM to catch the same day flight to Lukla.
We, Nepal Everest Himalaya Hiking Adventure Company , always come out with the best plans and operations. Reaching Manthali from Kathmandu to Manthali via our private vehicle will take around 3 hours To catch your scheduled flight to Lukla, you have to reach the Manthali Airport on time.
You can drive to Manthali early in the morning, at around 4 am. But we think that early driving isn’t the best choice for our Trekking HIKING Traveler . Driving to Manthali half asleep and boarding on the Lukla flight will make it hectic for you. On the top, you’ll have to trek to Phakding after reaching Lukla. This will be tiring if you drive to Manthali in the early morning.
Alternative to Ramechhap Lukla Flight
For those who want to escape road travel there is an option of a helicopter ride. Kathmandu to Lukla Helicopter Flight costs US Dollor 1999 per flight which accommodates 5 people in it. The helicopter flight from Kathmandu to Lukla takes 40 to 50 minutes to reach the Tenzing Norgay Airport, Lukla (2,860m).
