Tumlingtar to Jiri Trek

Tumlingtar to Jiri Trek is an easy trek walked into the Khumbu(Everest) region. The traditional route from Tibet to Khumbu is used while performing this trek. The trek begins from Tumlingtar and follows the Arun River until we turn into Irkhu Khola Valley. Then the trek ahead toward Salpa Pass and Salpa Kharka. The trek offers close look of Rai and Sherpa people with their traditional and cultural lifestyle. The trek also offers magnificent views of Mera Peak, Everest, Makalu and other peaks.

Tumlingtar to Jiri Trek is an easy trek walked into the Khumbu(Everest) region. The traditional route from Tibet to Khumbu is used while performing this trek. The trek begins from Tumlingtar and follows the Arun River until we turn into Irkhu Khola Valley. Then the trek ahead toward Salpa Pass and Salpa Kharka.

This is a beautiful trek that passes along several passes offering tremendous views of the Himalayan range and green valleys. The trek passes through Sagarmatha and Makalu-Barun National Parks; it is one of the best and famous trekking routes. We trek through traditional villages of people living who follow Sherpa and Rai, the trail takes you through beautiful rhododendron forests. The route was founded by locals in the past as a trading route, and sooner the trading route became a trekking route.

Tumlingtar to Jiri trek route is one of the most Remote Trek in Nepal. This beautiful valley trekking route is developed by ancient traditional people with the purpose of exchange. People used to operate trade to Tibet from Tumlingtar via Lukla through Namche Bazaar with great joy of Nature. After the development of infrastructure, this route was no more in use for the trading purpose. This route starts from Tumlingtar and moves toward the Irkhu Valley, which is famous for natural paper production. This route has a unique ecology and geography that pass toward the holy lake called Salpa Pokhari. Friendly and Naive villager is the best motivational aspect of this trekking route. It will go further to a beautiful waterfall. Trekking in Nepal with this trekking itinerary takes you through the amazing landscape of trekking in the Himalayas, This trekking route is less participated and full of adventure for the trekkers.

Tumlingtar to  Jiri trek is also a  Cultural Trek in Nepal, Rai, and Sherpa are the tribes of people who have more density in this wonderful land. This region is famous for Tungba, local alcohol made by Sherpa community which is also called local beer. The highest point of this trekking route is Salpa Bhangyan 3800m. and Salpa Kharka the highest campsite 3600m. We can have a view of Mera peak 6,476 m, Everest 8848m, Makalu 8481 and so many mighty peaks above terrace field. Makalu national park also falls under this trekking route so this is also called the main gate to Makalu Barun National Park. Makalu national park is full of tropical forest which is habitats of wild diversity of fauna spices. There are 315 spices of Butterflies and 88 spices of a mammal. So this land is the place of natural diversity.

Note: below trekking hours, altitudes and distances are approximate, and absolutely for general idea only.  

Day 1: Arrive at Kathmandu airport (1,302m/4,270ft)

You will be received and  Transfer to the hotel by our staff, refresh yourself and take some rest or explore the area around your hotel. Accommodate at Kathmandu.

Day 2: Kathmandu valley sightseeing and Trek preparation

Kathmandu is the cultural heart of Nepal and has been a famous destination for tourists ever since Nepal opened its borders to visitors. Today after breakfast we will explore Kathmandu valley, a guided tour will be conducted to major world heritage sites inside the valley. As Kathmandu valley is a beautiful combination of Hinduism and Buddhism we will visit historical sites like; Durbar Squares, Pashupatinath, Swayambhunath (monkey temple) and Buddhist shrine of Bouddhanath which is one of the largest stupa in the world. After the tour you will prepare yourself for the trek, will be briefed about the trek; buy all the trekking equipments required and overnight at hotel.

Day 3: Fly to Tumlingtar / 1hr drive to Khadbari (1,041m/3,415ft)

You will have an early breakfast in the hotel and get transferred to the airport from where we will take our flight to Tumlingtar. Once we land at Tumlingtar we will be transferred to Khadbari in a local vehicle there. Khadbari is the districts headquarter of Sankhuasabha District; the village has a big market area, having free leisure time you can explore the town. There are few hotels and restraints here, we will accommodate the night here.

Day 4: Khadbari to Majuwadanda (800m/2,624ft) 5hrs trek

After having an early breakfast we leave Khadbari and rejoin our trail; as we begin to trek we trek through a small route that takes us downhill. Along the trail we come across two paths; a flat path and another downhill, we will trek through the downhill route again as we will be offered with beautiful views of Makalu range. Continuing trekking we cross a river and follow the wider path to Arun River, trekking along the river we will reach the village of Chewabesi. From here, we trek further to another village known as Kattike Pull. Leaving the village we will cross a suspension bridge and trek steeply, we continue trekking gradually along the river, below us we can see beautiful Arun valley. Trekking further from here within few hours of trekking we will arrive at the village of Majuwadanda, it is a small settlement with few small guesthouses. 

Day 5: Majuwadanda to Salpa Phedi (1,530m/5,019ft) 8hrs trek

Today is a long trek day and we also enter Solukhumbu section of this trek. After having an early breakfast we begin to trek; leaving the village we trek uphill through few steep climbs and rest being flatter. Along the trail we will be offered with beautiful views of snow capped mountains of the Makalu range. Soon we will reach a point where we will have to choose between two trails, we will take the one that descends downhill passing through few small settlements like Chalise and Tabutar and the trail also goes through sub-tropical jungle. As we continue to trek we cross a small river and then another river which is comparatively bigger, the river is called Liknuwa Khola. We will trek along this trail throughout today’s trail, we cross Kulung and Tabutar village. Continuing to trek we follow the river through gentle flat trail taking us to another settlement known as Gothe Bazar, this can be a good place where we can stop for lunch. After having lunch we rejoin our trail along the river, cross few rivers and settlements, we also trek through subtropical forest. Trekking further we pass the village of Tendo, from here we then cross another suspension bridge and trek for few more hours to the rai village of Salap Phedi. 

Day 6: Salpa Phedi to Sanam (2,834m/9,297ft) [via Salpa pass (3,340m/10,958ft)] 8hrs trek

Today is another long trek day; there are many ups and downs through the trail. After having breakfast we rejoin the trail and begin to trek. Leaving Salpa Phedi we trek for few hours until we arrive at the Sherpa village of Thulo Phokte, it is a small village with few guesthouses so we can stop here to have our lunch. After lunch we can visit the Chochen Gompa monastery in the village. From here we continue to trek to a small guest house where there is a camping site too, many trekkers who don’t go to Sanam stops here for the night. From here we then ascend steeply to Salpa pass, along the trail we will come across beautiful mani walls and once we reach the top of the pass we will be offered with beautiful views of the region from the pass to Mount Dudh Kunda. The Salpa Pass brings you into Solukhumbu. From the top of the pass you can choose to trek to Salpa Lake, Shilicho Viewpoint or descend to Sanam. From here it is few hours descend to Sanam, we trek through beautiful pine and rhododendron forests. Once we reach the village we will walk up to our campsite and camp the night there.

Day 7: Sanam to Khiraule (2,535m/8,316ft) 8hrs trek

Today’s trail is the longest descent along with a tough climb, after breakfast we leave Sanam and descend trekking through rhododendron forests. Along the trail we pass by mani wall and get to view Mt Numbur. As we continue to trek we pass a large mani stone and wall and trek to the village of Gudel, is a big village offerin views of Mera Peak and Mt Chamlang. Leaving the village we trek along the stream flowing through the village, we descend down to Hongu Khola where we cross a bridge and climb up to the village of Bung. We trek through the village passing National Park office of Makalu Barun National Park, the trail continues passing more small settlements, forests and agricultural land and finally to Khiraule. 

Day 8: Khiraule to Sibuche (2,800m/9,186ft) [via Surke La/Charakot Pass (3,070m/10,072ft)] 7hrs trek

We have an early breakfast and rejoin the trail; we trek through the small trail entering into rhododendron forests, we pass a beautiful stupa. Trekking through the forest we then pass a small settlement of Charkot. From Charkot trekkers trek to Panch Pokhari (Five Lakes) which a beautiful destination but we continue the trail leading towards Surke La/Charakot Pass. As we reach at the top of the pass we then descend through rhododendron forest to the village of Najingdingma, after the village we continue trekking through a small trail. The trail steeply descends through forests to Hinku River, after crossing the river we then ascend steeply for few hours to Sibuche. 

Day 9: Sibuche to Paiya (2,767m/9,078ft) [via Narkung La / Chaduk pass (3,161m/10,370ft) and Kari La pass (3,059m/10036ft)] 7hrs trek

Today is a challenging trek day; we cross two passes through the trail. Leaving Sibuche we ascend steeply to the first pass, Narkung La. As we reach the top of the pass we will get to see beautiful view of Mt Numbur, from here we then steeply descend to a small settlement known as Panggom. We leave the village and trek to Kharikhola, the trail continues descending through forest to a small bridge from where we then ascend towards the next pass; Kari La. The trail to the top is beautiful passing through forests and high slopes along with views of Mt Numbur. Once we reach at the top of the pass and if the weather is supportive then we will get to see beautiful views of Mt Numbur, Dudhkoshi valley all the way till Namche Bazar and even Cho Oyo. From here we descend steeply following the trade route from Kharikhola, few hours of trekking will take us to the small village of Paiya.

Day 10: Paiya to Lukla (2,840m/9,317ft) 4hrs trek

Comparatively today is a short trek day; after having breakfast we begin to trek. The trail mostly goes through forests and passes many lodges along the trail. As we begin to trek we gradually trek uphill for some time and then steeply descend to Surke, along the trail we will be offered with beautiful views of Khumbi Yul La, Khongde, Numbur and Kusum Khangaru, views of these snow capped mountains are worth trekking for. From Surke we trek to a bridge, after which the trail is a steep climb to Lukla. Lukla is beautiful town which is the starting point for trekkers in Everest region; the most number of people living here are Sherpa people.

Day 11: Lukla to Kharikhola (2,007m/6,584ft) 8hrs trek

To reach Kharikhola we have to retrace the trail back to Paiya; after having breakfast we leave for Kharikhola. As we rejoin the trail it is a short descent to Surke and ascends back to Paiya, it is a few hours of trek to Paiya from Surke. Once we reach Paiya we will trek further to a junction where we will take the trail towards Kharikhola, we will arrive at Thamdada. At the end of the village we come across a Y-junction from where we take the trail that goes down, few minutes of descending will take us to sonam lodge from where there trail descends steeply through the forest. We descend down to Dudh Koshi River and to the village of Kare, further to Bupsa. Now we descend to the river Khari khola and cross the bridge over it, once we cross the river we gradually ascend to the village of Kharikhola. It is a larger, spread-out village with several guest houses and lodges

Day 12: Kharikhola to Ringmu (2,739m/8,986ft) [via Taksindu La (3,062m/10,045ft)] 8hrs trek

We have an early breakfast and rejoin our trail; the trail is with lots of climbing and descending. From the village we descend to the village of Juving and descend further to the bridge over Dudh Koshi. Once crossing the bridge it’s a long ascend towards the pass, we trek through countryside and forests. Along the trail we will be offered with amazing views of the Himalayan peaks, such as Kusum Kangaru, Mt Numbur, Khatang and Karyalung. Continuing to trek we pass the village of Nunthala and Taksindu; then finaaly to Taksindu La pass, once we reach the top of the pass it is a good view point for Himalaya ranges. From the pass it is few hours trekking through pine forests to Ringmu, it is a Shepa village with grassy fields surrounding it. 

Day 13: Ringmu to Sete (2,538m/8,326ft) [via Lamjura La (3,532m/11,587)] 9-10hrs trek

Today is the longest trail of the trek; after having breakfast we begin to trek. Leaving Ringmu we gradually descend to a bridge and then cross the bridge following the trail that ascends through forest, as we climb higher we reach a village called Salu and then to the village of Phurtyang. From the village we will be offered with amazing views of Mt Everest, Thamserku, Kangtega, Kusum Khangaru and Mera Peak. Just as we leave the village we come across a Y-junction from where we take the trail going up through grasslands and pine forests, the trail now descends to another town known as Junbesi. From this village we take the trail ascending to Lamjura La, along the trail at first we mostly trek through grasslands and through rhododendron forests to the top of the pass. After the pass we trek through the trail that is more or less flat and soon the trail descends steeply to another settlement called Dakchu and further to Sete. 

 

Day 14: Sete to Deurali (2,700m/8,858ft) 7hrs trek

After having an early breakfast we rejoin the trail and continue to trek. From here we descend down to a charming village known as Kinja, right after the village is a police post where you will have to register yourself because we will be trekking through Gaurishankar Conservation Area Project (GCAP). In Shivalaya there is a GCAP check post where you will have to pay Rs 2000 and cross the river, as we cross the river we enter Ramecchap and leave Solukhumbu behind. After we cross a bridge there are 3 trails we can choose from; 2 trail going up and one going down, we choose the new trail that goes down because this trail is a bit shorter compared to the old trail. We trek along the Linkhu Khola and cross a bridge to a dirt road, this trail will take us to the village of Korhem and soon after the village we climb to another small settlement known as Balding. From here we go up and down trekking through forests to the village of Bhandar, this village lies also in the Numbur cheese circuit; it is a beautiful non-touristic route passing through isolated Sherpa villages.

Day 15: Deurali to Jiri (1,930m/6,332ft) 6hrs trek

Today is the last day of our trek; after having breakfast we begin to trek. As we rejoin the trail we start with descending through rhododendron forests and then through countryside. Soon we arrive at a dirt trail and then descend further to the village of Sangba Danda, from here the trail continues to descend further along the beautiful Khimti Khola far below us. After about an hour we will reach Shivalaya, it is the checkpost of the Gaurishankar Conservation Area Project, where you will have to pay rs 2,000. After crossing the bridge the trail follows the Yelung Khola upstream, the trail then climbs high above the river and goes through forest. Along the trail we get a good view of Gaurishankar. We cross Mali village and trek through dirt road and then through pine forests, we reach another village called Chirte. From here we trek straight towards Jiri bypassing the village of Bakhor, jiri is a interestingly busy town with many shops and guesthouses. We will stay the night here in the town.

 

Day 16: Jiri to Kathmandu 7hrs drive

After we have an early breakfast we walk up to the bus stop from where an arranged vehicle will drive us to Kathmandu, once we reach Kathmandu you will be transferred to your hotel. You can either rest or explore the city and accommodate the night here.

Day 17: Back home

You are free and have leisure time to explore Kathmandu until it is flight time, when you will be transferred to the airport and fly back home.
